Up for auction is an exceptional early 19th‑century Holy Bible, bearing an 1819 copyright and published by the American Bible Society in New York. Adding wonderful provenance, the front pages include a handwritten note stating that James Burns purchased this Bible on July 24, 1825, giving it a personal historical connection rarely found in surviving examples.
The Bible shows the warm, time‑earned character expected of a volume over two centuries old, including mottled browning and age‑related discoloration throughout the pages. At some point in its long life, Scotch‑type tape was applied to help secure the front cover, while the spine remains intact and solid, a testament to its durability. Additional handwritten notes and inscriptions appear on the covers and several interior pages, typical of family Bibles of this era and adding to its individuality and charm.
Despite its age, this Bible remains in impressive overall condition and stands as a meaningful collectible for historians, antique book enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates early American religious artifacts.
