Up for auction are two antique 19th‑century engravings based on celebrated historical paintings depicting the final moments of two military commanders in Quebec City, each from a different war. The top print, The Death of General Montgomery after John Trumbull (1786), portrays the fallen American general during the failed 1775 assault on Quebec in the early days of the Revolutionary War. The bottom print, The Death of General Wolfe after Benjamin West (1770), captures the dramatic scene of Wolfe’s final moments at the 1759 Battle of the Plains of Abraham - an image famous for its contemporary military dress and iconic martyr‑like composition. These Victorian steel‑plate engravings were popular ways for 19th‑century households to own reproductions of these revered historical works and remain highly collectible today.
As is common with antique paper media, the edges show age‑appropriate wear, some corner loss along with light water staining, but the images remain striking and display beautifully. Currently unmounted, they should be kept away from moisture and direct sunlight to preserve the paper.
